European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
