Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then discovered numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials say early analysis indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.

A senior representative stated the attack made him without words and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
